The proportion of new energy (NE) in the grid is increasing, but its natural instability has seriously limited its further development. Energy storage devices are essential for the continuous power supply of NE, redox flow battery (RFB) is one of the most promising technologies for large-scale stationary energy storage up to MW (power) or MWh (energy), but the development of the RFBs has been impeded by many shortcomings, such as high electrolyte corrosively, cost and membrane crossover rate. Organic redox flow batteries (ORFB) hold a great promise to overcome major drawbacks by the use of organic redox-active compounds instead of the inorganic redox–active materials. In this report, I will introduce the basic knowledge and the latest developments of the organic redox flow battery.
